PMC certification info Is a Three Day Certification CourseRight for Me?
PMC Guild Certification Program
Certification Program Details Certification is a three day intensive program designed for the PMC artist that has extensive experience in working with the material. The PMC artist should feel comfortable with the basics of joining, slip joining, hollow forms, ring construction, rolling out equal thickness of clay, stamping textures, working with 2-D and 3-D forms before registering for this level of PMC class. Determining the comfort level is the decision of the PMC artist. This class is designed for the individual ready to take the next step to test their skills and range of technical abilities in working with Precious Metal Clay. The class is also designed for the individual that would like to teach their own classes in working with Precious Metal Clay. Our hope is that Certification Classes will train a community of teachers that than will then go on to teach many different levels and types of PMC classes themselves. Certification classes are organized by the PMC Guild and taught by one of our highly qualified Senior Instructors. Completion of the program rests on the student completing the 7 projects, identical to the teacher's examples. Once all projects have passed, the student is awarded certification. Not every student passes the program in the three days that the class meets. It is typical for people to work on their projects outside of class time and submit them by mail to the Senior Instructor for review at a later date. There is no deadline for this review process. The cost is $?? and includes three days of instruction, three ounce of PMC, (1 ounce of PMC+, and 2 ounces of standard PMC), Teacher's Packet (includes Tim McCreight's and Bruce Baker's new audio CD, "Teaching with Confidence"- a $30 value), a finishing and findings kit from Rio Grande, and a tool kit. Meals, lodging, and travel are not included. For the individual with no experience, our first suggestion is to find an introductory class in your area. Certification is not a beginners class! Classes taught by instructors who have taken the PMC certification program post their classes on the PMC Guild web site and in our quarterly newsletter, Studio PMC, available to PMC Guild members. Up-to-the-minute postings by the teachers themselves can
be found
on the Guild Website
PMC classes are popping up everywhere. Check your local community colleges, continuing education programs, bead shops, fabric and button stores, recreation centers, and local polymer clay guilds.
If no classes are available in your area, we suggest you work with at least three ounce of clay and watch the PMC video, before registering for the advanced certification class. The clay does not have to be fired to learn many of the skills needed to be prepared for a certification class. Much of the work with PMC is done prior to firing, leaving only the finishing work to be done. Finishing is covered in the certification class and prior experience in this area is valuable, but, not necessary. The PMC video is instructed by renowned teacher and artist, Tim McCreight and serves as a valuable resource for the PMC artist. PMC and the instructional video are available on this web site When will you host Certification in my area? The PMCG is making the best attempt to scatter classes around the country. The United States of America is a big place and they are trying to hit every region in a systematic pattern. For example, if they have just offered a class in Seattle, WA, the northwestern region of the US, the next class might be in Sarasota, FL., the southeastern corner of the US. It could be 3 to 4 months before they offer a class in the northwest again. If they have not offered a class in your area yet, we thank you for your request and note your pleas for certification in your part of this great big country of ours. We will be posting a list of cities of POSSIBLE AREAS for classes in the future on the web site and in our next issues of the newsletter. These are not guaranteed class sites but areas we would like to offer a class in the future due to region or frequency of requests for a class in that area.
If a nearby town is not on this list please do not despair. They would like to host a class in your area in the future. You could assist in this process in several ways. 1. Find others in your area that would be interested in signing up for a PMC Certification Class. PMC Guild need 9 committed individuals to schedule a class. 2. Once you find 9 people that are dedicated, find a three day weekend when all could participate and two alternative weekends. Typically, Certification classes fall over a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We could also offer a class on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Classes meet from 9 to 5 for these three days and this schedule is not flexible. The cost is $475.00 and includes three ounce of PMC, (1 ounce of PMC+, and 2 ounces of standard PMC), a finishing and findings kit. 3. Finding the place for hosting the class is a great help from people in the area. An art center is one possibility, but it might be easier to book space at a hotel. An advantage to a hotel is that many people that travel can stay there without having to rent a car and navigate in a strange town. Possible hotel chains are Courtyard by Mariott, Holiday Inn Express, Hampton Inn, etc. We look for hotels in these price ranges, rental for the classroom between $100.00 to $150.00 per day and price for the participant's hotel stay from $ 50.00 to $ 70.00 for nightly room rate. Other needs are to have the class location close to restaurants for lunch breaks. Meals are not included in the certification classes. the PMC Guild needs a selection of several food options in the area. Most people do not like to eat pizza for three days in a row. Another consideration is the relationship to the airport and shuttle service to the location/hotel for people flying in from out of town. 4. Once you have complied this information, email it to PMC Guild with your phone number and they will take it from here. the will then call you to discuss the details. Let your fellow "certification wanting friends" know that they will try to make the request a reality.
